ki karma kim akarmeti
kavayo ‘py atra mohitā
tat te karma pravakyāmi
yaj jñātvā mokyase ‘śubhāt

What is karma(action) and what is akarma(inaction), even the intelligent are bewildered in this matter. That karma knowing which you will get rid of the misfortune, I shall explain to you.

Even the knowledgable are confused about what is your duty and what is not. So Sri Krishna says you follow what the liberated souls have done in the past.

Sri Krishna will also explain in the following verses the kind of karma one should be doing to get rid of the misfortune from not doing your duties.
