Chapter 3 – Karma Yoga

Shloka 21 – 22


yad yad ācarati śreṣṭhas
tat tad evetaro jana
sa yat pramāa kurute
lokas tad anuvartate


yatwhatever; yatand whichever; ācaratidoes he act; śreṣṭharespectable leader; tatthat; tatand that alone; evacertainly; itaracommon; janaperson; sahe; yatwhichever; pramāamevidence; kurutedoes perform; lokaall the world; tatthat; anuvartatefollow in the footsteps.

However the respectable people act, the common man acts in a similar way. Whatever he follows as right, people will follow that as right.

In the previous verse, Lord said that even after attaining liberation one should act to set an example. Here he is elaborating on that. People generally have a tendency to follow respectable men in the society. So it becomes the responsibility of these respectable men to act in a such a way that it is worthy of being followed.



na me pārthāsti kartavya
triu lokeu kiñcana
nānavāptam avāptavya
varta eva ca karmai


nanone; me—Mine; pārthaO son of Pthā; astithere is; kartavyamany prescribed duty; triuin the three; lokeuplanetary systems; kiñcana—anything; nano; anavāptamin want; avāptavyamto be gained; varteengaged; evacertainly; caalso; karmaiin one’s prescribed duty.

O Son of Partha, there is no kartavya(duty) for me in all three worlds. There is no want for anything, nor there is anything to be gained, yet I am engaged in action(karma).

There is nothing for the Lord to be gained, nor there is any need or want for anything. Yet He is engaged in Karma, only to set an example.
