Shloka 39:

O Partha! thus far I have described unto you the mindset to keep through saankhya yoga(analytical study of the soul). Now listen to the mindset to keep to release you from the bondage of karma.

So far Sri Krishna was analyzing the characteristics of the soul, and what could happen if Arjuna doesn’t fight. Arjuna should fight. Now he is asking Arjuna to listen to how to get rid of the bondage of karma while doing karma(in this case, fighting).

Some people are more inclined towards dhyana(meditate, think about something), for those Sankhya Yoga has been told.

Some people are more inclined towards action. Now for those kind, Karma Yoga is being told.

Shloka 40

Any endeavoring done in this respect will not incur any loss, or go for waste. Even little practice of this dharma will release one from great fear.

The yoga that Sri Krishna is about to preach, if someone even does some karma in that path, it won’t go for a waste or will diminish in value any time. Even if someone does little karma like this, he will get rid of his great fears.

Acting not expecting any results, but for the sake of it, will get rid of one’s greatest fears. And it will never go for waste. Karma done keeping material gains in the mind, can go waste if you don’t get those material gains. But the one done with the mindset that Sri Krishna is about to preach, that kind of karma will never go for waste. It will in fact get rid of one’s greatest fears… well, I’m intrigued.. how can Karma done with this respect get rid of my fears?
